The Bee That Launched a Compliance Revolution

Back in 2018, when Vicky Pearce set out to build B-Compliant, she wasn’t trying to create a consultancy with a mascot. Instead, she was trying to fix a problem she saw everywhere.

At the time, firms paid for compliance support that showed up once a year, produced a polite but impersonal audit, then disappeared just as quietly. As a result, compliance often existed on paper, not in practice. It rarely felt like the kind of partnership that helped anyone sleep better at night.

Seeing the Gap

From her perspective, the gap in the market was obvious. Too often, firms received reports instead of reassurance, and recommendations instead of real help.

What was missing, however, was a consultant who knew the business, understood the people behind it, and got stuck in. Not someone who simply left behind a laminated to-do list.

Because of that, she made a straightforward decision. If that kind of support didn’t exist, she would build it.

Why the Bee?

Naturally, as a Mancunian, she gravitated towards the worker bee.

In Manchester, bees do not sit at the edge of the hive pointing out problems. Instead, they get involved, share the load, and help the whole community thrive.

For Vicky, the hive represents the advice profession. Financial advisers, wealth planners, mortgage advisers, and the teams behind them all work quietly to keep clients safe. In that context, B-Compliant acts as the extra pair of wings helping everything run smoothly.

From Metaphor to Mascot

At first, the bee served as a metaphor for how we work. More recently, it became something tangible.

Earlier this year, we created a set of bees. Soft, stripy, and unmistakably Mancunian, they are just the right size to sit on a meeting table without distracting from the Financial Conduct Authority’s latest publication.

Although they were meant as a bit of fun, something unexpected happened. People loved them.

A Buzz in the Boardroom

Before long, the bees became conversation starters.

They travelled with us in tote bags and laptop cases, while also appearing beside coffee cups and notepads. Soon, they took up quiet residence in boardrooms across the UK.

In some meetings, advisers joked that the bees looked more relaxed about compliance deadlines than they felt. In others, people asked if the bee took minutes.

Yet one question came up more than any other. What is its name?

Unfortunately, we never had a good answer.

Time to Name the Bee

As we approached our April birthday, it felt like the right moment to change that.

Over time, the bees have become part of our story. They have visited long-standing clients as well as new connections. More importantly, they reflect the spirit Vicky built the firm on. Practical help, no fuss, and a genuine commitment to the hive.

If they are going to keep doing that, they deserve a name that reflects the community they serve.

Join the Hive

So this year, we are launching our Name the Bee competition.

Throughout April, we will collect suggestions and then reveal the winner on World Bee Day in May.

While it is light-hearted, it also means something. It marks how B-Compliant has grown from one person’s determination to do things differently into a hive supported by many.

So, if you have a name in mind, we would love to hear it.

After all, the hive works best when everyone plays their part, and our bee is long overdue an introduction.
